• Sonny Rollins’ soundtrack for the film “Alfie” is an emblem of jazz excellence, showcasing the dynamic range and spontaneous creativity Rollins is renowned for. Recorded at Twickenham Film Studios with Britain’s jazz luminaries like Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott, and later at Rudy Van Gelders studio with a lineup including Phil Woods and Kenny Burrell, the album represents a triumph of improvisation and musical mastery. The music, purely instrumental save for one track, captures the film’s mood swings and has been noted for its depth and innovation. Released on the Impulse! label in 1966, the album is not only a significant jazz recording but also a historical artifact, echoing the cultural and cinematic zeitgeist of the 1960s.
