Released three years (and two years of worldwide touring) after their debut album, it reached No. 1 in the United States and was a big seller in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

    For years, singer Adam Duritz considered this album to be his favorite of the band's albums. Duritz was joined on the album by founding members David Bryson (guitar) and Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), as well as new additions Ben Mize (drums) and Dan Vickrey (guitar). Multi-instrumentalist David Immerglck contributed to the album as a session musician.

    Counting Crows brought producer Gil Norton on board for "Recovering the Satellites". The track "Miller's Angels" was produced by Marvin Etzioni. Three sing
