• Milan-born Nino Rota (1911-1979) studied composition with Orefice and Pizzetti. He was encouraged by Arturo Toscanini to enroll at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied composition with Scalero and conducting with Fritz Reiner. His music uniquely blends his love for Italian popular song, American pop music and jazz, and operetta. He kept his music tonal and accessible and had success in concert works, popular and art songs, and opera. But he is best known for his film music. He formed one of the cinema’s major director/composer partnerships, writing music for all the films of Federico Fellini up to Rota’s death in 1979.
