• Giant Steps, released in January 1960, is a landmark recording in modern jazz and one of John Coltranes most influential works. Recorded during his transition from sideman to bandleader, the album captures the crystallization of Coltranes innovative harmonic ideaslater dubbed the Coltrane changes. With support from Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums, Coltrane pushes the boundaries of bebop harmony into new, more complex territory. The title track, a blistering exercise in rapid chordal movement, set a new technical and conceptual standard for improvisers across generations.
