• Oblique is one of only two quartet sessions recorded for Blue Note by the great vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson (the other is the classic “Happenings”). Both albums featured influential pianist Herbie Hancock and master drummer Joe Chambers, with the only variable in the line-up here being bassist Albert Stinson. Hutcherson’s airy opener “Til Then”, Hancock’s massive “Theme From Blow Up” and Chambers’ adventurous “Oblique” are the highlights of a session that, taken as a whole, represents an incredible journey from hard bop grooves to exploratory sonic tone poems. The album, recorded in 1967, was first released in 1979.
