  Gary Numan’s second studio album “Telekon” was released in 1980 and was his third consecutive number one album in the UK. Gary describes this album, along with its two predecessors, “Tubeway Armys Replicas” and his debut solo album “The Pleasure Principle”, as the “machine” phase of his career. Although it was difficult to build on the success of the previous releases, “Telekon” proved to be extremely influential. Unlike its predecessors, “Telekon” contained many guitars, strings and lush synthesizer sounds. Trent Reznor claimed to have listened to the album daily during the production of Pretty Hate Machine.
